How Percentage Math Works
X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y. Percentage change = ((New − Old) ÷ |Old|) × 100. Discounted price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Reverse VAT: Gross ÷ (1 + Tax Rate).
Everyday Examples
Common real-life situations:
Shopping discounts
$120 jacket at 30% off = $84. Stack 10% member discount = $75.60 (37% off).
Tip calculation
$80 dinner + 18% tip = $14.40 tip, $94.40 total.
Salary increase
$75K to $82.5K = 10% raise. After 5% inflation, real raise is 4.8%.
VAT reverse
€240 including 20% VAT = €200 pre-tax. VAT portion is €40.
Quick Math Tips
Mental math shortcuts:
The 10% trick
Move decimal one place left. 10% of 240 = 24.
The 25% shortcut
25% = divide by 4. 75% = subtract 25% from total.
The 1% method
Find 1% by dividing by 100, then multiply.
Change direction
Always divide by the original value, not the new one.
Stacking discounts
Two 20% discounts = 36% off, not 40%.
Common Percentage Mistakes
Easy-to-avoid errors:
Change vs difference
Change has direction (old to new). Difference is symmetric.
Adding percentages directly
20% up then 20% down = 4% lower, not back to original.
Wrong base
Always divide by the original value for percentage change.
Compound discounts
30% off + 10% coupon = 37% total off, not 40%.
Markup vs margin
50% markup on $100 = $150. Margin on $150 is only 33.3%.
Expert Tips
Tax-inclusive pricing
Use reverse percentage: Price ÷ (1 + VAT rate) for pre-tax amount.
Double-check big discounts
Compare sale price to similar products, not inflated "original" price.
Tip on pre-tax amount
Tip on subtotal, not total with tax — standard practice.
